I am happy to hear things are starting to take shape over there. My son attended Charie's birthday party in 03 while he was visiting his Popps (Leroy) and family. He has a wonderful photo of the two of them, must of been earlier into the celebration as Charlie looks a bit brighter than the photo with Donna.
Tyrone is also blessed with Cherokee and Chochtaw blood in his veins, (my side) as well as those creole genes from Leroy's side. He has wonderful memories of his stay and both our thoughts go out to each and everyone affected by this tragedy that has touched us all.

Charlie and I paid a short visit to the Cresent City Tuesday and Wed. CBD has power; some power up to about Conti St. Those that have power have power and those that don't have power don't have power. We saw three power trucks as we drove from mid-city to the quarter through Marigny and into the Bywater area of the 9th ward. There was no access over the industrial canal into thel ower 9th ward. Power poles are still hanging and broken and its been THREE weeks in a dry area. Multi-tasking just does not seem to be part of the fed response as they concentrate on one thing at a time. I am watching the lower 9th flood again because all efforts have been concentrated on the 17th st. canal. Why couldn't they have also begun shoring up the industrial canal as well? Power trucks were turned away from entering New Orleans so goes the reports. I believe it because in Central Florida last year when we suffered three hurricanes in a row, we had thousands of trucks from all over the country here and power was restored in most places from coast to coast within 3 days and the really bad spots within two weeks. Over 4 million people were affected. New Orleans has less than 500,000 and is EMPTY for pete's sakes and they can't move faster than what they are. BS! I am starting to lose the positive attitude and really start questioning the agenda behind the negligence in regard to the restoring of services to New Orleans.
Insult to injury--Hess and other gas stations are now gouging the hapless with another angle.I was charged $100 deposit for using my credit card to obtain gas !! What is this! Please call your banks and insist that they stop this assault on our pocketbooks! Please don't buy from HESS and others who are adding insult to injury to evacuees and those who are trying to bring relief!

Hi all,
There are currently 28 New Orleans families living in Seminole County, Fl, with about 68 children enrolled in the schools here. We just signed a young New Orleanian to teach calculus at one of the largest high schools here. I have seen interviews of people who are starting new lives here and I have spoken to several teacher groups about the unique cultures of New Orleans. The empathy and caring for our displaced New Orleanians is just overwhelming. Seminole County Public Schools and our other 7 sister counties that make up our High Tech Corridor over here have all (independently) set up accounts for funding the relocation and education of folks from New Orleans. The time is getting closer for all of our return. Charlie and I will "probably" be going in at the end of this week or this week-end. Margaret is already back across the river. Luckily the house was not damaged and they have electricity. Most of Jefferson Parish residents are back. Business folks are slowly filtering into the CBD and the Quarter among other dry areas. I call locals who have stayed in the Quarter almost every day. I applaud their perseverance and the fact that they maintained a citizen presence in the face of stacked odds.
See you sooner than the media is projecting!
Donna and Charlie

Hi everyone,
This is just in from one of our "out-of-town-regulars". Please pass this on to anyone that you think may benefit from this offer:

Subject: housing
Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:37:09 -0500
Charlie & Donna
With so many people needing housing, I thought I'd pass this info along to you - please forward it as you see fit. I'm a Donna's regular, whenever I'm in New Orleans. I'm sure you don't recognize my name, but Charlie would know me one sight, and I've talked to you quite a few times too, Donna. Just found out tonight that Germaine Bazzle & Ellen Smith are OK, and I'm watching "Make It Funky" on VH1, so I'm having a great night, but I know that some people won't have a good day or night for a long time. I'd like to help however I can, and housing is my business so maybe that's how I can help the most.

We manage several small apartment complexes in Arkansas that are financed by USDA. We can provide immediate housing for Katrina victims in 1- or 2-bedroom apts. Rent subsidy is available, so rent would be based on income (for those who currently have no income they would pay 0 rent and receive a subsidy check to apply to their electric bill). We can also do month-to-month leases for people who don't need long-term housing. Our company is also waiving the security deposit for Katrina evacuees and in most cases we can also give the first month rent-free (if they would be paying any rent), and we can get funds to pay the deposit with the electric company. These are not large or fancy apartments, but are well-built, energy-efficient, carpeted, have central heat/air. There are several other companies in Arkansas that manage this same type of housing. There are also USDA-financed apartments in Texas, Louisiana & Mississippi, but I have no specifics about their features.

This housing might be a good option for people who are currently out of work, but who would like something besides temporary housing living in someone else's home.

Anyone wanting more information can contact Southland Management at 870-382-6762. Ask for Debbie, or leave a message for me. Or e-mail me at smcdeb@seark.net.

Debra Moody
Southland Management
Dumas, AR

So glad to hear that you are both OK after the hurricane. We still have such happy memories of our short visit in 2003 and our stay on North Rampart - Donna's was one of the first places we thought of as the awfulness of Katrina started to emerge over here on the BBC. We had vowed to come back some day anyway - ironically, we had sort of planned a foursome for New Orleans for Sept this year to celebrate my sister's 50th, but Mo got sick and we had to put our plans back.

Our very best love, good wishes and hopes for the future to you both, to all the great musicians, and to everyone in New Orleans who showed us such friendship when we were last over. We WILL get back again some day to say all this in person, I hope!

I am very positive that the French Quarter, Uptown, Marigny, Bywater and the other many dry places in New Orleans will be up and running way before the politicians and TV pundits think.
